Gamification in Summer Reading Programs
There have been many previous instances of successful games used in summer reading programs. Below are three examples:
Wandoo Reader
The Wandoo Reader was created by Evanced Solutions and has been implemented to great success in several libraries. It is available in both mobile and desktop formats. A reader creates a username and password and then begins logging books they've read. Logging books scores points which allows them to upgrade their character. Readers can dive into a rich story with good character creation all through the power of reading. To the right is a demo of the system.

Pierce County LibraryPierce County Library created their Teen Summer Challenge. It was a program designed to encourage learning through an interactive point scoring system. Topics were divided into things like "Animals" and "Video Games". While not wholly a summer reading program it was incorporated into their summer reading program and increased participation tremendously.

Mythical Maze
Mythical Maze has been incorporated into several libraries. Designed for ages 4-11 mythical maze is a mobile game that encourages reading and exploration. Children are asked to explore the library and find hanging pictures of "monsters." These monsters can be seen in augmented reality using the application. Once collected the monster unlocks aspects of the app. Books also unlock aspects of the application as children read various titles to work their way through the game. The game has been received well and been lauded by numerous sources.
